Description

The tugboat, for its size, is the most INSANELY HARD vehicle to get used to drawing, and the Artist was determined to overcome the associated nerves with a simple sketch of Ten Cents... aaand then I think my hand must have slipped. This. Took A WHOLE DAY. On and off, at least. There was a dog walk on the beach and assorted doing stuff for members of the family and dissertation work interspersed throughout.

This is the first time I've used watercolour paints (as opposed to pencils) in a long while, and honestly I'm thinking I might give them some more love. I was put off because I used to overdo the whole 'water' bit and make some nice paper pulp. :P Watercolour paper would probably work better to be honest, and I do have some, but everything I end up wanting to paint seems to happen on my (cheaper) regular stuff! This is admittedly a pretty boring and static picture to be putting paint on, but I'll say in my defence that reference pictures for TUGS characters are obviously way more limited than for the Thomas crowd, and I'm not as used to drawing them yet. And as usual the scanner made the colours all muddy, and brought out the uneven parts of the colouring, but it actually works with the look I was going for. I love how TUGS has vehicle characters that are anthropomorphic but not cartoony, with plenty of details and grime. To an adult audience (or at least to me) it feels so much more real than something like Bob the Builder, and I feel you get a lot more involved with the characters and their world as a result.

Ten Cents (c) whoever the Fulton Ferry he belongs to these days.
Art (c) me, but feel free to share as long as you credit and link back.
